This course will introduce you to the creative world of visual communication and aims to broaden your understanding of graphic design, equip you with awareness and skills enabling you to be more creative when designing publications for print.
Class sessions include discussion on the elements of good design, practical design projects on symbols/logos, business cards, letterheads, advertisements, CD covers, posters, labels, and packaging. You will receive printed handouts on a wide range of topics. Printed examples will be evaluated in class. Materials for visualising and design layouts will be provided.
Participants will develop skills in design task analysis, rendering, typography, illustration, layout design, the use of colour and lots more. Computer applications may be used to demonstrate some concepts however this is not a computer applications training course and participants will not use computers during the training.
As this is a very practical course, participants will have the opportunity to add to, or progress toward developing a graphic design portfolio which may be useful for full-time design course entry or when seeking employment.
COURSE OUTLINE
Introduction
- Overview of the course and its aims
- The applications of design (ads, logos, web, packaging, etc)
- The aims of design — communication, of a message or a feeling; how that communication can be confused
- Design language; colour, shape, texture, balance, etc. Learning to 'see'
- Cropping Ls
- Sketching; positive and negative space; drawing in continous line; drawing from a photo in shapes; Thumbnails; logo design
Design Briefs
- Dealing with clients; client-supplied material
- Printing processes; the brief's requirements and limitations;
- Printing terms and standards; Liaising with printer
- Breaking down design project into stages; Identifying goals relevant to deadlines.
- Appropriate materials, equipment
- Evaluating target market; what do you need to communicate and to whom; researching design subject; gathering ideas; making connections
Design Process
- Looking now at elimination of ideas that don't work, developing best design
- Developing design to presentation-ready visual
Typography
- Text as information (copyfitting) versus type as design (using shape, angles, colour, tone of type to complement subject)
- Matching font(s) to design subject
- Emphasising each part of the copy with the right weight; differentiating between lines of text (headings, subheadings and lines of copy; When to bold, italicise, etc)

Colour
- The colour wheel; primary, secondary and tertiary colours
- The emotional effects of colour; warm versus cool, hard versus soft; the suitability of certain colours to certain subjects
- Complementary colours
- Printing in colour — the options & limitations

Illustration and Photography
- Copyrights; resource libraries; supplied material

Learning Outcomes
The Graphic Design Fundamentals is an accredited course comprises training in units of competence from the Nationally Endorsed Printing and Graphic Arts Training Package.
Participants will be assessed during the course against the competency standards and upon successful completion will be credited with a Certificate of Attainment for the unit of competence ICPPP11bA Develop a Basic Design Concept.
Units of competence include:-
ICPPP11bA-1 Assess the requirements of the brief.
ICPPP11bA-2 Assemble layout materials.
ICPPP11bA-3 Render a simple graphic design.
ICPPP11bA-4 Produce finished artwork.
ICPPP11bA-5 Check for suitability.

Meet the Trainer
Rachel Pepper is the artroom coordinator for 'The West Australian' newspaper, where she acts as a studio manager as well as creating information graphics and illustrations. Prior to that she had worked in advertising and as a freelance illustrator.
While Rachel has many years of experience with the industry-standard software applications, her skills were grounded in the pre-digital days of graphic design. In this course she will teach the design process almost exclusively off the computer, all the way to creating print-ready artwork.

Training Method
Prepress Skills Centre is a specialist training centre (since 1995) with many years experience in providing specialist training to both the print and web publishing industries.
During the course participants will develop the skills required to complete structured exercises and workplace related projects. All techniques and skills will be demonstrated and each participant will be provided with feedback on their progress and personal attention when required.
Prerequisites
Prior Graphic Design knowledge is not a prerequisite.
